The Setting Sun: a review

The Setting Sun sits in a convert location in Hanover just at the top of Sussex Street Hill.

Naturally, like most places in Hanover you'll need to scale a bit of a steep hill before you get there, but it is well worth the climb. From their patio you can see all of Brighton in all it's glory. It is an especially wonderful view if you are there in the evening to watch the sun set (as per the name of the pub).

The interior of the pub is small which naturally has it's advantages and disadvantages. Larger groups will probably want to sit outside as it would be a squeeze inside. Although their is also another indoor area which you can access by going across the patio area. Lack of space on the inside is probably the pub's biggest downfall. While great in summer (if it is sunny) the open air patio becomes a drawback in the more rain-heavy seasons.

The drinks are reasonably priced as you can expect them to be in Brighton, neither surprisingly cheap or eye-wateringly expensive at around £3.70 for a pint on tap.

The decor is quite modern compared with many pubs in Brighton and it's light wood and chrome design fits in well with the pub's light aesthetic. It's also very clean with no sticky floors or sodden cardboard beer-mats to be found, instead a chandelier hangs over the bar.

It could very well be described as stylish, it's a place where you are more likely to find young professionals than retired gentlemen; so depending on who you like to hang around with when you're drinking this could be either a pro or a con.

Another real draw for the pub is the food they have on offer, which once again departs from traditional English pub fare . The Setting Sun offers a tapas menu with offerings including baked Camembert, calamari and patatas bravas. However they do still offer a traditional roast on Sundays.

All in all The Setting Sun is a pub for those who enjoy a good view off the beaten track away from central Brighton. It is a nice alternative for those who may find the traditional pubs in Brighton a little too dark and crowded.

4.5/5
